When Nile girls taught us how to make candles, liquid Soap and reusable sanitary pads my interest was in liquid soap. I remember one of the men that taught us said, even with 5o,oooUGX you can start a liquid soap business. When I mix 251itres of water I can make a profit of about 70000 UGX to 78000 UGX.
Whenever I’m making liquid soap or sanitary pads I make sure I call these young girls in P6 and P7 to come watch and learn. I don’t want them to waste money buying these single use pads when they can make their own. I want them to have a skill that can benefit them while in school or even after school like me, instead of them depending on their parents or asking money from men. Many of the girls here when they drop out of school or even when they’re in school holidays they hardly have anything to engage them. So they resort to vices like prostitution for money. Prostitution has a lot of problems like contracting HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
If we had a lot girls joining Nile girls this can change. I was very broke I used to wear torn dresses but thanks to Nile girls. I’m now proud of myself because I’ve been able to create my own job. I used to struggle getting sanitary pads during my periods, I would get insults whenever I asked any of my parents for money to buy pads. I’m glad today I can make my own and sell some.
